Our Story
Our Origins - 1979
The Mother Lode Scots is a non-profit organization incorporated within the State of California in the beautiful Gold Rush famous Amador County. We came into being in 1979, when a small group, wanted to provide an organization where fellow Scots and those of Scottish descent could come together to stimulate, encourage, support, and sponsor activities which lead to the preservation of Scottish customs, traditions, and culture.
Our Mission Statement
The specific objectives and purposes of this corporation shall be:
To practice and preserve Scottish and Celtic traditions.
To encourage understanding of Scottish and Celtic traditions in the community through educational endeavors such as the presentation of Highland Games, Living History, Country and Highland Dancing and Music. A Mother Lode Scots information booth will from time to time be at various civic events.
Our purpose also is to raise scholarship money for anyone in the community interested in learning and applying Scottish and/or Celtic traditions such as, but not limited to, music, dance, highland athletics and the Gaelic language. Typical fund raising events may include the annual Christmas Walk, Highland Games and Faire, the annual Burns Supper, and Scottish Tea.
To engage in other activities related to educating the public about the Scottish and Celtic heritage and traditions.
To help at least one (1) local family of Scottish and/or Celtic descent that is in need.
A Few Things We Do and Have Done in the Past
Mother Lode Scots, like their counterparts the world over, enjoy participating in Scottish celebrations, where we have an opportunity to wear the kilt or family tartans and proudly display our heritage. Some of these celebrations are true Scottish traditions, while others are a blending of the Celtic cultures. Along with meeting up and attending many of the Scottish games and festivals throughout the Northwest, we may participate in the following:
Burns Supper
An annual true Scottish tradition. Burns Supper is a celebration in honor of Robert Burns, the national poet of Scotland. In grand style and tradition with bagpipes, reading of his poetry, singing of his songs and a traditional meal. And, one cannot forget the haggis during this display of pomp and frivolity. Traditionally held in January.
Kirkin o’ the Tartan
Traditionally held fairly close to Easter, the Kirkin o’ the Tartan, is a tradition that involves blessing tartan fabrics and garments during a church service. The tradition is said to have originated in the 18th century when the wearing of tartan was suppressed following the Jacobite uprising.
Scots Candlelight Christmas Walk
For many years we have hosted this December evening event in Volcano, CA. After a short candle lit stroll through the Main Street and a Gaelic blessing, the Mother Lode Scots members with the help of the community provide an evening of homemade soups, breads, and desserts accompanied by music and Celtic dancing.
